What's the difference between consulting and coaching?
Short answer:
In coaching, you are the expert, and I help you discover the path forward rooted in your own wisdom and experience, I don't give advice. In consulting, I am a resource for you in a particular area where I have extensive experience and expertise, and though it is a collaborative relationship, I will also give advice and direct suggestions.

Longer answer:
Coaching
-
Can be focused on any type of goal, exploration, project, or question
-
Especially helpful if you have some dreams or visions you want to focus on realizing (either personally or professionally, or both), or if you find yourself stuck in a rut and want to get unstuck
-
Rooted in a deep belief in your own resourcefulness to access your ideas for creative and effective steps and solutions that will lead to flourishing for you and/or your organization
-
Involves deep listening, reflecting back and mirroring, and asking rigorous questions
-
The coach does not give advice or answers, but supports you in tapping into your own best wisdom and creativity
-
Topics of each coaching session and goals are wholly determined by you
-
Typically one-on-one, and can meet weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly
Consulting
-
Focuses on the needs for growth, development, or transformation in an organization
-
Especially helpful if you have a desire for specific guidance that draws upon my experience and expertise in particular areas (like disability, faith communities, church starting, personal transformation)
-
Relationship is collaborative, involves insight and ideas from you and from me
-
As the consultant, I may suggest things we need to focus on, or areas of growth or development that need attention
-
Can provide recommendations, strategic plans, and a roadmap for next steps and a way forward
-
Consulting can happen either individually, or with a group (like a leadership team)
-
Meetings can happen weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, depending on the organization's needs
